David Mulholland

Middle-Grade Fantasy Author

Weaving tales of magic, adventure, and Irish mythology for young readers who dare to believe

Discover My Work

Welcome

I'm a storyteller with roots in film and television who discovered my true calling writing middle-grade fantasy. My debut novel, Logan Argus and the Otherworld, blends Irish mythology with contemporary adventure—creating a world where ancient magic collides with modern reality, and where a boy's search for identity becomes an epic quest to save two worlds.

I've always been a storyteller. For years, that meant screenwriting—crafting narratives for nonfiction television on major cable networks and adapting books for Oscar-winning production companies. But during the pandemic, something shifted.

My kids were the perfect age for middle-grade books, and I wanted to write something they could read. Something with adventure, humor, heart, and the kind of magic that makes you believe anything is possible. That story became Logan Argus and the Otherworld.

Five years later, my kids have outgrown middle-grade fiction, but I fell in love with Logan and his friends, with the mythology, with the world I'd built. I knew I had to share Logan's journey—and his search for identity—with readers everywhere.

My connection to Irish mythology runs deep. I'm fascinated by the rich tapestry of Celtic legends—stories that deserve the same spotlight as Greek, Roman, and Norse myths. Last summer, I traveled through Ireland, walking ancient landscapes and drawing inspiration from the land itself. That trip infused my writing with authenticity and wonder.

Credentials: My work has been recognized by the SCBWI Rocky Mountain Region, where the opening chapters of Logan Argus were shortlisted for the 2024 Golden Pen Award. I was also a 2025 participant in the SCBWI Michelle Begley Mentor Program. Earlier in my career, I won Best Screenplay for In/Significant Others (2009) and the Jovanovich Imaginative Writing Award in college.

When I'm not writing, you'll find me with a camera in hand—capturing landscapes and moments that tell their own stories—or planning my next adventure. I currently live in Colorado, where I balance my creative pursuits with my day job in operations at DISH Network.

Logan Argus and the Otherworld

Middle-Grade Fantasy Adventure • 75,000 words

For twelve-year-old Logan Argus, the world is falling apart—literally. Floods rise, forests burn, and tornadoes spin through cities every day. When a bully rips off his stick-on eyepatch, Logan unleashes a fiery blast from his eye, a power he never knew he had.

Then two mysterious classmates arrive with shocking news: Logan was stolen as a baby by villains who plan to use him to control a crumbling magical realm. Now that realm's chaos is spilling onto Earth. To stop the natural disasters, Logan must journey to that hidden world, master his power, and confront the villains before everything is consumed by destruction.

Inspired by Irish mythology, Logan Argus and the Otherworld is fast-paced and fun, letting kids be kids while offering real emotional depth. It's a story about identity, belonging, and finding the courage to be yourself—even when you're not sure who that is.

Comparable Titles: This book would sit comfortably alongside the world-building of Katherine Rundell's Impossible Creatures, the humor and whimsy of Jessica Townsend's Nevermoor, and the mythic storytelling of Roshani Chokshi's Aru Shah series.
